A living symbol of Costa Rican culture
Sarchí lies about 46 km northwest of San José, on the slopes of Costa Rica’s Central Volcanic Range. Known as the cradle of national craftsmanship, the town is famous for painted oxcarts, traditional furniture and generations of woodworkers and decorative painters.
This private one-day experience connects two of Sarchí’s defining landmarks: the monumental oxcart in the central park and the historic Eloy Alfaro Oxcart Factory.
The world’s largest painted oxcart
In Sarchí Norte’s central park, opposite the church, stands the giant hand-painted oxcart created for a Guinness World Records achievement in 2006. Municipal information describes it as approximately 15 meters long and nearly two tons in weight.
The vivid geometric and floral decoration represents the distinctive Sarchí painting tradition. Costa Rica’s oxherding and oxcart traditions were proclaimed by UNESCO in 2005 and later inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Eloy Alfaro Oxcart Factory — a century of living craftsmanship
Founded in 1923 in Sarchí Norte, the historic Eloy Alfaro workshop keeps alive the traditional skills used to build, repair and decorate Costa Rican oxcarts. Visitors can see the relationship between woodworking, wheel-making and the intricate hand-painted geometric and floral patterns that made the Sarchí style famous.
One of the workshop’s most remarkable features is its traditional hydraulic power system. Water from the nearby Trojas River drives machinery through a waterwheel system historically capable of generating about 12 horsepower. The workshop is therefore not only a place to see finished crafts: it is a working window into the mechanical ingenuity and artisan knowledge behind the oxcart tradition.
What you discover at the workshop
The visit connects the entire craft: how wooden components and wheels are shaped, how the cart is assembled, how artists create the characteristic Sarchí decoration, and how this working tradition evolved from an essential coffee-transport vehicle into one of Costa Rica’s best-known cultural symbols. The factory also includes a museum and locally made crafts, supporting artisans who continue the tradition today.
Sarchí: Costa Rica’s cradle of craftsmanship
Sarchí Norte and Sarchí Sur are nationally known for woodworking and furniture production. Local workshops produce traditional rocking chairs, turned-wood furniture, decorative objects, souvenirs and painted oxcarts. The distinctive “Sarchí style” developed over generations and became closely associated with Costa Rican folk art.
