The highlands around Irazú and northern Cartago are also an important agricultural landscape, especially for potatoes, onions and other vegetables. A Cartago itinerary can continue to the Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels, one of the city’s principal cultural and religious landmarks.
Irazú rises to 3,432 meters and has played a major role in Costa Rican history, including its famous 1963 eruption. Cartago, the country’s former capital, remains an important religious and historical center.
